Cable Tray Types Explained: Ladder, Tray, Trough and Solid-Bottom Compared

Cable trays are the backbone of modern cable management systems in buildings, factories, data centres and infrastructure. But "cable tray" covers several distinct designs, each suited to different cable types and load requirements. This guide compares the main types so you can specify the right one.

1. Ladder Cable Tray

A ladder tray has two side rails connected by rungs, resembling a ladder. The open design provides excellent ventilation and easy access, making it ideal for heavy power cables that generate heat. It is the most common choice for industrial and utility installations.

2. Tray-Type (Perforated) Cable Tray

A tray-type tray has a flat, perforated bottom. The perforations allow airflow, drainage and flexible cable tie-down while providing continuous support for cables along their length - a good fit for instrumentation and control cables.

3. Trough Cable Tray

A trough tray has solid, raised sides that contain cables securely. It is suited to areas where cables must be protected from falling debris or where a neat, enclosed appearance is required.

4. Solid-Bottom vs. Perforated

  • Perforated: better heat dissipation, lighter weight, more tie-down points.
  • Solid-bottom: stronger, protects cables from dust and moisture, better for outdoor or dirty environments.

5. How to Choose

  • Heavy power cables, high heat: ladder tray.
  • Control/instrument cables, flexible routing: perforated tray-type.
  • Debris protection, clean appearance: trough or solid-bottom.
  • Long spans: consider large-span or reinforced designs.

6. Sourcing Checklist

  • Confirm load class and span requirements.
  • Check material and finish: hot-dip galvanised, zinc-aluminium-magnesium, powder-coated, stainless or aluminium.
  • Verify accessory compatibility (connecting plates, hangers, bonding jumpers).
  • Ask about custom widths, heights, thicknesses and OEM branding.
