Cable Tray Materials Compared: Hot-Dip Galvanised, Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium and Stainless Steel

The material and surface finish of a cable tray determine how long it will last, especially in humid, coastal, industrial or outdoor environments. Choosing the wrong finish is one of the most expensive mistakes in a cable management project. This guide compares the main options.

1. Hot-Dip Galvanised (HDG)

HDG trays are immersed in molten zinc, forming a thick metallurgical bond (typically 65-85 microns) across all surfaces, including cut edges. It offers excellent corrosion protection and is the standard for outdoor and humid industrial installations.

2. Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (ZAM)

ZAM coating combines zinc with aluminium and magnesium, delivering significantly better corrosion resistance than conventional galvanising - often 3 to 5 times the service life in salt-spray tests. It is an increasingly popular choice for coastal and high-humidity projects because it self-heals at cut edges.

3. Powder-Coated

Powder coating provides a uniform coloured finish with good appearance and moderate corrosion resistance. It is commonly used indoors where aesthetics matter, such as commercial buildings and data centres. It is not recommended as a standalone finish for aggressive outdoor environments.

4. Aluminium Alloy

Aluminium trays are lightweight, naturally corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic. They suit clean environments and applications where weight matters, but are softer than steel and less suited to heavy loads.

5. Stainless Steel

Stainless steel (typically 304 or 316) offers the highest corrosion resistance and is used in food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical and marine environments. It is the premium option where hygiene and extreme durability are required.

Choosing the Right Finish

  • Indoor, dry, aesthetic: powder-coated or pre-galvanised.
  • Outdoor, humid, industrial: hot-dip galvanised.
  • Coastal / high-salt / long service life: zinc-aluminium-magnesium or stainless steel.
  • Food / pharma / chemical: stainless steel 304 or 316.
