A cable tray order can be placed in three quite different ways, and the differences are not cosmetic: they decide who owns the drawing, who carries the tooling, how long sampling takes and how much of the system you can change later. This guide sets out how OEM, ODM and full custom work in practice for cable tray and accessory supply, and how to pick between them before you send an enquiry.
1. The Three Models at a Glance
In cable tray supply the three models are usually described in terms of ownership of the design, not in terms of price alone.
- OEM: you supply the drawing or specification, and the factory manufactures to it under your brand.
- ODM: you select from an existing, already-engineered range and adapt it - sizes, thickness, finish, accessories and branding.
- Full custom: a new section, a new fitting geometry or a new application is engineered from a brief, drawing or physical sample.
2. OEM: You Supply the Drawing
OEM is the right model when your project already has an engineered drawing set - typically from a design institute, an EPC contractor or your own engineering team. The tray section, width, height, material thickness, perforation pattern, finish and fitting schedule are all defined before the enquiry goes out.
What the factory contributes is manufacturing discipline: forming the profile to the stated dimensions, controlling the coating specification, producing the matching fittings, and supplying the accessories that make the run complete. The advantage is a precise match to the project specification. The trade-off is that every change after drawing approval has to be re-approved, so the drawing set needs to be genuinely frozen before production is scheduled.
3. ODM: Adapt an Existing Range
ODM starts from trays that are already designed and proven. A typical range covers ladder trays for heavy power cables, perforated tray-type trays for control and instrumentation cables, trough and solid-bottom trays where cables need to be enclosed, plus moulded, large-span and fire-resistant partition designs for particular duties. The differences between those designs, and which cable type each suits, are set out in our guide to cable tray types.
Customization under ODM is real but bounded. In practice it covers width and height adjustments, material thickness, the finish and coating system, the accessory set, packaging and branding. Because the base design already exists, sampling and production can usually start sooner than with a new profile, and the load data for the standard section is already established.
4. Full Custom: A New Section or a New Application
Full custom is used when nothing in the standard range fits - an unusual width or height, a non-standard bend or transition, an interface to equipment that was not designed for a standard tray, or an application outside cable management altogether, such as solar panel components or distribution box parts.
This model works from whatever the buyer has available: a full drawing set, a sketch with critical dimensions, or a physical sample. The engineering step is longer because the section has to be reviewed for formability and the coating process has to be confirmed for the finished geometry, and the first output is normally a sample rather than a production run.
5. What Each Model Changes Later in the Project
- Drawing ownership: with OEM the drawing is yours and stays yours; with ODM the base design belongs to the supplier and your changes sit on top of it.
- Tooling and set-up: OEM and full custom may require new forming or punching set-up, which belongs in the first order rather than the unit price alone.
- Sampling time: samples are typically available in 3 to 7 days, and the upper end of that range belongs to the more complex, fully custom items.
- Reordering: ODM repeat orders are the simplest, because the specification is already on file; OEM repeats depend on how well the original drawing set is maintained.
- Documentation: ISO, CE and RoHS documentation is available on request, and the certificate set you need should be confirmed at the quotation stage rather than after production.
- Branding and packing: neutral or custom logo packaging is available in all three models, so branding should not be the reason for choosing one over another.
6. Choosing Between the Three Models
- You have a complete drawing set and a fixed specification: place the order as OEM.
- You need a proven tray quickly, with some adjustment: choose from the established range and customize sizes, finish, accessories and packing.
- Nothing standard fits, or the part is not a standard tray: brief it as a full custom project and expect a sample first.
- You are still at concept stage: send the requirement, the environment and the load expectations, and let the engineering review tell you which model is realistic - the answers to the usual commercial questions are collected on our FAQ page.
